Inside-the-Ear

In-the-ear hearing aids require an impression of your ear(s) in order to custom fit the earmold to your unique size and shape. These custom-made earmolds ensure a snug and extremely comfortable fit. Popular styles of in-the-ear hearing aids include Completely-in-canal (CIC), In-the-canal (ITC), In-the-ear (ITE) and Invisible-in-canal (IIC) hearing aids.

In-the-Ear Hearing Aid

In-The-Ear (ITE)

Suitable for individuals with mild to severe hearing loss. These are the largest of the custom-made hearing aids.

An in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid is custom made in two styles — one that fills most of the bowl-shaped area of your outer ear (full shell) and one that fills only the lower part (half shell) like an earplug.

ITE hearing aids have the latest digital technology contained in a custom moulded casing that fits in the ear. These styles are typically available in different skin tones to blend with the outer ear. Once fitted they are virtually invisible to the naked eye.

  • Small, discreet and custom-fit to your ear to ensure utmost comfort.
  • Largest inside-the-ear hearing aid, making them easier to insert and remove.
  • Has the most powerful amplifier of the custom styles.
  • Larger size also allows for more features than other inside-the-ear options.
  • Uses a larger battery for longer battery life, with several options for rechargeable batteries.
  • The snug fit means that they are great if you are active/sporty.
  • A good option if you want an easy-to-handle device.
  • Suitable for people wearing glasses.
  • Susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker.
  • More vulnerable to moisture.
  • Less discreet than other inside-the-ear hearing aids.
  • May pick up more wind noise than smaller devices.
  • Don’t work as well for children whose ears are still growing.
  • Slightly larger size can make wearers feel plugged up.

In-the-Canal (ITC)

Improves hearing for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

An in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aid is custom molded and fits partly in the ear canal. ITC hearing aids are the most popular custom hearing aid.

These hearing aids are slightly larger than CIC hearing aids, which means that although they are still discreet, they are slightly more visible than their CIC and IIC counterparts.

In-the-Canal Hearing Aid
  • Small, very discreet and custom-fit to your ear to ensure utmost comfort.
  • Less visible in the ear than larger behind-the-ear styles.
  • Some are available with options such as volume control and push buttons that change environmental programs.
  • Longer battery life and more features than IIC and CIC style.
  • Suitable for people wearing glasses.
  • Susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker.
  • Less discreet than IIC and CIC hearing aids.
  • It may include features that won’t fit on IIC and CIC hearing aids, however these may be difficult to adjust due to its small size.
  • Small size may be challenging to wearers with dexterity issues.
  • Slightly larger size can make wearers feel plugged up.
Completely-in-Canal Hearing Aid

Completely-in-Canal (CIC)

Improves hearing for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

A completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aid is molded to fit inside your ear canal.

These hearing aids are barely noticeable to the people around you. Slightly larger than IIC hearing aids, some may accommodate an optional manual control button that allows you to adjust settings for different environments.

  • Small, very discreet and custom-fit to your ear to ensure utmost comfort.
  • Less likely to pick up wind noise.
  • Suitable for people wearing glasses.
  • Susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker.
  • Uses very small batteries, which have shorter life and can be difficult to handle.
  • Small size may be challenging to wearers with dexterity issues.
  • Often doesn’t include extra features, such as volume control or a directional microphone.

Invisible-in-Canal (IIC)

IIC hearing aids are suitable for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.

These are the smallest hearing aids available. IIC’s are custom-made to sit deep in the ear canal (with a tiny cord to allow for easy removal) and are virtually invisible to the eye.

An IIC is the perfect solution for those who want a completely discreet hearing aid.

Invisible-in-Canal Hearing Aid
  • Extremely discreet and custom-made for your ear to ensure utmost comfit.
  • Smallest hearing aids available and completely invisible to the naked eye.
  • Adjustments can be made via a dedicated external device.
  • Provides exceptional natural sound quality.
  • Allows you to naturally determine which direction sounds are coming from.
  • No wind noise due to the deep fit in the ear canal.
  • They do not get in the way of your wearing helmets, headphones or any other type of headgear and are suitable for people wearing glasses.
  • Easily adjustable volume or turn it off and on with an easy to use remote control.
  • Susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker and moisture damage.
  • The small size can be a problem for those with dexterity concerns.
