Outside-the-Ear

Outside-the-ear hearing aids are generally standard or off-the-shelf hearing aids that can be fitted while you are in the hearing professionals office.

An impression of the ear for an earmold is not always required. The hearing professional will customize the fitting/programming for each patient, as opposed to the actual hearing device.

Behind-the-ear (BTE) and Receiver-in-canal (RIC) are two popular styles of outside-the-ear hearing aids.

Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aid
Behind-the-Ear

A behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid rests comfortable behind your ear. A tiny tube connects the hearing aid to a custom-fitted earpiece (earmold), that fits in your ear canal. The smaller BTE options (“Mini” BTE) are virtually “invisible” as they disappear behind the ear.

The most versatile and powerful hearing aid, BTE’s are the popular choice for people with severe to profound hearing loss. This hearing aid is also commonly used for children, as the custom earmolds can be replaced as the ear grows.

  • Comfortable, versatile and quick to fit.
  • Larger hearing aid, making it the easiest to adjust and handle.
  • The most powerful hearing aid, capable of more amplification than are other styles.
  • Easy to maintain and take care of. Extremely durable and reliable.
  • Larger batteries provide longer battery life and some select models have a rechargeable option.
  • Has manual control options.
  • Connectable to digital devices such as smartphone, TV and radio using Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity.
  • Useful for children because of their durability and ability to connect to assistive listening devices.
  • Generally require fewer repairs and have a longer lifespan.
  • The custom-fit earmold can be replaced separately.
  • Less susceptible to moisture damage.
  • Available in many different colours and shapes.
  • Least discreet hearing aid style – Although some newer mini designs are streamlined and barely visible.
  • May pick up more wind noise than other styles do.
  • Less suitable to people who wear glasses.

Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) or Receiver-in-the-Ear (RITE)

The receiver-in-canal (RIC) and receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) styles are similar to a BTE hearing aid with the amplifier or receiver that sits in the ear canal, however, RICs are smaller and more discreet. Instead of a tube, a nearly invisible wire connects the piece behind the ear to the amplifier or receiver, which is housed in a soft dome or custom earmold in the ear. RIC hearing aids offer the most natural sound experience by placing the speaker directly in the canal. Small, discreet and quick to fit. Perfect for first-time hearing aid wearers.

A smaller version of the BTE hearing aid, today’s RITE’s are small and streamlined, making them barely noticeable. These hearing aids improve hearing for people with mild-to-moderate hearing loss.

Receiver-in-the-Ear Hearing Aid
  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • The behind the ear portion is slimmer, smaller and more discreet than BTE models.
  • Provides superior sound quality and a better listening experience, particularly with hearing your own voice.
  • Distancing the speaker from the microphone makes it less susceptible to feedback.
  • Larger batteries provide longer battery life and some select models have a rechargeable option.Has manual control options.
  • Connectable to digital devices such as smartphone, TV and radio using Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity.
  • Connectable to digital devices such as smartphone, TV and radio using Bluetooth or other wireless connectivity.
  • Offers a comfortable open-fit, allowing for a less clogged up feel.
  • Available in many different colours and shapes.
  • Is susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker and receiver end is vulnerable to moisture.
  • Smaller sizes can be a problem for those with dexterity challenges.
  • Less intrusive placement than other hearing aid styles means it can be easy to lose them and not notice.
  • Although smaller, the component that sits behind the ear is visible, making it less discreet than in-the-ear styles.
  • Less suitable to people who wear glasses.
