Types and Styles

Hearing aids are not a one-size-fits-all purchase and vary a great deal in price, size, special features and the manner in which they are placed in your ear. It is best to consult with an audiologist to figure out which kind of hearing aid will work best for you and to discuss any special features that you may need.

Factors influencing your choice of device include:

  • The type of hearing loss you have and how severe it is.
  • Your age and the structure or shape of your ear.
  • How well you can manage small devices (dexterity).
  • Your specific lifestyle needs i.e. are you active, are you regularly on your phone.
  • Cosmetic appeal.
  • Budget.
Here are some of the most common styles available to you.

Outside-the-Ear

Outside-the-ear hearing aids are generally standard or off-the-shelf hearing aids that can be fitted while you are in the hearing professionals office. An impression of the ear for an earmold is not always required. The hearing professional will customize the fitting/programming for each patient, as opposed to the actual hearing device. Behind-the-ear (BTE) and Receiver-in-canal (RIC) are two popular styles of outside-the-ear hearing aids.

Inside-the-Ear

In-the-ear hearing aids require an impression of your ear(s) in order to custom fit the earmold to your unique size and shape. These custom-made earmolds ensure a snug and extremely comfortable fit. Popular styles of in-the-ear hearing aids include Completely-in-canal (CIC), In-the-canal (ITC), In-the-ear (ITE) and Invisible-in-canal (IIC) hearing aids.
